Maltby minors
Junior musical theatre group
We are a junior musical theatre group attached to the main Maltby musical theatre group. We formed in 1991 and are open to young people aged between10 and 21. During this time we have staged many shows such as Fame, Grease, Forbidden Planet, Annie, as well as performing musical concerts both alone and jointly with the Parent Society.
From the 22nd to 24th June 2009, we performed a musical written by Tim Rice and Andrew LLoyd Webber, "The Likes of Us". This was the Yorkshire Premier (and currently only the 5th ever) amateur production.
"The likes of us" is set in mid-Victorian London, and chronicals the life of Dr. Thomas Barnardo, a fiery medical student who abandons plans to become a missionary in China when he sees the desperate plight of children in his own city. With the Industrial revolution, and in less than 50 years London has grown to house half the population of the UK, and it is not prepared. It is overcrowded and poverty is widespread. Orphaned and abandoned children, or just those of the poor are put to work from the age or 4 or 5 and many live on the streets. Half of all funerals in London are of children under 10. This story leads us to the formation of the famous childrens' homes, and the organisation which bears Thomas Barnardo's name today.
It was performed at at the Wesley Centre, Blyth Road, Maltby.
