Junior musical theatre group

We are a junior musical theatre group attached to the main Maltby Musical Theatre Group. We formed in 1991 and are open to young people aged between10 and 21. During this time we have staged many shows such as Fame, Grease, Forbidden Planet, Annie, as well as performing musical concerts both alone and jointly with the Parent Society.

The Wizard of Oz

Maltby Minors have found our own wizard approach to the oft-told story of the ‘Wizard of Oz.’

Everybody knows the story of ‘Oz’ so we thought we’d take a risk and bring it to life in our own unique way using techniques from across the world of theatre.

These techniques include masks, physical theatre and some unusual choreography.

We have taken the approach of an ensemble theatre group who all take on many and varied roles in the performance including the roles of objects, places and even weather! 

We have been exploring the idea of puppets and decided to have the voices of the characters as the puppet masters to their bodies! This created an extra level of difficulty for the young actors but also inspired new heights of creativity and encouraged both voices and bodies to push their ability to the limit.

The cast have realised during this unusual process that not one member of the group has ‘a minor’ role. Not one cast member is less important than anyone else; there are no ‘starlets’ here.

The very nature of the ensemble and physical techniques we have been exploring mean that all cast members have to support each other and give total commitment for a scene to work and for a performance to be successful.

The group have worked hard learning skills that are often used in professional theatre and offer their inventive and new work to you, hoping you will share our leap into the unknown.
